About this lot

Dalí: was born in Figueres, a small town at the foot of the Pyrenees, about 25 kilometers from the French border, in Catalonia (Spain) on May 11, 1904. In his younger years, Dalí was interested in painters such as El Greco, Francisco Goya, Michelangelo and Diego Velázquez. At that time, he turned his attention to Impressionism and Cubism. Salvador Dalí studied in Madrid from 1921 to 1924. Already at that time, probably to draw attention to himself, he was an eccentric figure. In 1926 he went to Paris. There he met Pablo Picasso and André Breton. In 1929, he was welcomed by Breton and joined Surrealism. In the US, Dalí worked for years as a consultant and illustrator for the famous Walt Disney. Dalí was also known for his moustache, which was thin, elongated and gracefully curved. Like antennae, both moustache tips pointed upwards or were curled. Dalí claimed that he received inspiration from the cosmos through his whiskers. His mustache was inspired by that of another world-famous Spanish painter, Diego Velázquez. On January 23, 1989, Dalí himself died of cardiac arrest in the Galatea Tower of the Dalí Theater Museum in Figueres, where he lived for the last years of his life. He was buried here in a crypt under the stage.

Frequently asked questions

How can I bid on a lot?

To place a bid, you need to have an account with Troostwijk. You can create one by clicking on 'Create Account' at the top right corner of our website. Once registered and after completing your profile, you can start bidding on your desired items.

What is reserve price?

A reserve price is the (non-visible!) minimum amount that a seller has set for a lot and is the lowest price for which the seller is willing to sell. The highest bidder who meets or exceeds this price wins.

If this price is not met, you can still have a chance to win. The closer your bid is to the reserve price, the greater your chance of winning this lot.

The lot is awarded to the highest bidder whose bid is equal to - or higher than - the reserve price at the end of the auction. If the highest bid has met the reserve price or more, the lot is sold immediately for this price.

How much does it cost to buy at Troostwijk?

There is a fee, the buyer's premium, added to each lot you win. The amount of the fee is shown on each individual lot. You see the buyer's premium for each lot when you are logged in as a customer at Troostwijk. Note that VAT is always added to your bid unless otherwise stated.

What is an auto bid versus a manual bid?

An auto bid is a way for you to automatically participate in a bidding process. You enter an amount you are willing to pay for an item and then automatic bids are placed for you up to your maximum bid - but only if necessary. Your maximum bid is hidden from other bidders during the auction. Placed auto bids are indicated by an "A" after the placed bid in the bid history. You need to update a manual bid every time someone outbids you. Keep in mind that an auto bid in the same level as a later manual bid will always lead the auction - because it was placed first.
