About this lot

Sometime in 1940 he must have met his future gallery owner Jeanne Bucher, as well as the artists Alberto Magnelli, Sonia Delaunay, Hans Arp and Le Corbusier. In September 1942, the de Staël family moved to Paris and Nicolas started working completely abstractly. His first exhibition took place at Galerie Jeanne Bucher, as well as the second (1944), in the company of the painters Wassily Kandinsky and César Domela Nieuwenhuis. After the liberation of Paris (still with Bucher) in 1945, the first recognition for his work came at a solo exhibition. He got to know the painters André Lanskoy and Georges Braque and joined the 'Nouvelle École de Paris'. In 1946 Jeannine died and later in the year he married Françoise Chapouton. They settled in a larger studio and regularly received Georges Braque. Thanks to influential relations, the international art market, especially the American one, began to open up to De Staël step by step (including in New York). The major museums in London, Paris, New York, Washington, etc., also began to show interest in his work and he signed a new contract with the Parisian gallerist Louis Carré. The demand for works by De Staël increased enormously and trips to the United States became part of the regular pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How do I place a bid?

You can easily participate in the auction through the website. Log in as usual and navigate to the lot of your choice. On the right side of the screen, you will find 'Bid' and 'Auto Bid.' Click on 'How does this work' for more information about automatic bidding.

Click on 'Bid' to see the total amount of your bid, including the buyer's premium and VAT. After accepting the general terms and user conditions by checking the box, click 'Confirm' to place the bid.

What is reserve price?

A reserve price is the (non-visible!) minimum amount that a seller has set for a lot and is the lowest price for which the seller is willing to sell. The highest bidder who meets or exceeds this price wins.

If this price is not met, you can still have a chance to win. The closer your bid is to the reserve price, the greater your chance of winning this lot.

The lot is awarded to the highest bidder whose bid is equal to - or higher than - the reserve price at the end of the auction. If the highest bid has met the reserve price or more, the lot is sold immediately for this price.

What costs are added to my bid?

In addition to your bid, additional costs are incurred in the form of a buyer's premium percentage and VAT. These percentages vary depending on the country. VAT is applied to both your bid and the buyer's premium. Before confirming your bid, you will always receive an overview detailing all relevant amounts associated with your bid, including the final total. This way, you are fully informed about the total amount of your bid.

What is an auto bid versus a manual bid?

An auto bid is a way for you to automatically participate in a bidding process. You enter an amount you are willing to pay for an item and then automatic bids are placed for you up to your maximum bid - but only if necessary. Your maximum bid is hidden from other bidders during the auction. Placed auto bids are indicated by an "A" after the placed bid in the bid history. You need to update a manual bid every time someone outbids you. Keep in mind that an auto bid in the same level as a later manual bid will always lead the auction - because it was placed first.
