About this lot

The Mercedes 190 SL perfectly illustrates the importance of listening to feedback. After the 300 SL was introduced, an American Mercedes importer commented that although many were interested, the 300 SL still proved too expensive for the average consumer looking for a weekend car. After a conversation with the head office in Germany, action was taken quickly; that same year, the 190 SL (based on the Ponton) was unveiled at the New York Stock Exchange. A year later, the production version was ready and presented in Geneva. Remarkably, the car was not positioned as a sports car, but as a comfortable two-seater. This proved to be a great success, with more than 25,000 units rolling off the German production line between 1955 and 1963. Our 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL has undergone a complete restoration by the previous owner in the Netherlands. This restoration has been carried out with attention to detail, with the intention of restoring the car to the same quality and authenticity as when it first left the factory. Every part has been carefully overhauled. Can you imagine driving around with the feeling that the car has just come out of the factory, while the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones is playing in the background? Viewing by appointment only!!

Frequently asked questions

How do I place a bid?

You can easily participate in the auction through the website. Log in as usual and navigate to the lot of your choice. On the right side of the screen, you will find 'Bid' and 'Auto Bid.' Click on 'How does this work' for more information about automatic bidding.

Click on 'Bid' to see the total amount of your bid, including the buyer's premium and VAT. After accepting the general terms and user conditions by checking the box, click 'Confirm' to place the bid.

What is reserve price?

A reserve price is the (non-visible!) minimum amount that a seller has set for a lot and is the lowest price for which the seller is willing to sell. The highest bidder who meets or exceeds this price wins.

If this price is not met, you can still have a chance to win. The closer your bid is to the reserve price, the greater your chance of winning this lot.

The lot is awarded to the highest bidder whose bid is equal to - or higher than - the reserve price at the end of the auction. If the highest bid has met the reserve price or more, the lot is sold immediately for this price.

What costs are added to my bid?

In addition to your bid, additional costs are incurred in the form of a buyer's premium percentage and VAT. These percentages vary depending on the country. VAT is applied to both your bid and the buyer's premium. Before confirming your bid, you will always receive an overview detailing all relevant amounts associated with your bid, including the final total. This way, you are fully informed about the total amount of your bid.

What is an auto bid versus a manual bid?

An auto bid is a way for you to automatically participate in a bidding process. You enter an amount you are willing to pay for an item and then automatic bids are placed for you up to your maximum bid - but only if necessary. Your maximum bid is hidden from other bidders during the auction. Placed auto bids are indicated by an "A" after the placed bid in the bid history. You need to update a manual bid every time someone outbids you. Keep in mind that an auto bid in the same level as a later manual bid will always lead the auction - because it was placed first.
