About this lot

Joseph Beuys: The works are usually unconventional in nature: they often create a strong opinion in the viewer. Beuys' avant-garde work is often described as strongly conceptual: for him, the effective communication of his ideas was more important than the personal manual elaboration of his works of art. The elaboration could also be done by technicians and craftsmen, for example. He made a total of more than 15,000 works. When asked, Beuys mentioned his 'Social Sculpture' as his most important work of art. This is a radical art theory in which every person can participate and is responsible for the quality of the society in which he lives. In collaboration with Klaus Staeck, he published graphic editions such as lithographs, posters, books, videos and series of art postcards, including cards made of wood and felt. In museums he made installations and displayed personal objects in display cases. Some of his sculptures were made of bronze. Examples of well-known works by Joseph Beuys are: How to explain paintings to a dead hare (1965), an action with a dead hare in the Schmela gallery in Düsseldorf; 'Felt suit' (1970), a suit consisting of trousers and a jacket made of felt; 'I love America and America loves me' (1974), a performance in which he had himself locked up in a cage with a coyote in a New York gallery for five days; and the sculptures called 'fat corner' (Fettecke): fat masses that were placed in the corner of a room, on a chair or in a cardboard box. A very important work in Beuys' oeuvre is the installation "Voglie vedere i miei montagne" in the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. The title refers to the words spoken by the 19th century painter Giovanni Segantini on his deathbed: 'Voglio vedere le mie montagne' ("I want to see my mountains").

Frequently asked questions

How can I bid on a lot?

To place a bid, you need to have an account with Troostwijk. You can create one by clicking on 'Create Account' at the top right corner of our website. Once registered and after completing your profile, you can start bidding on your desired items.

What is reserve price?

A reserve price is the (non-visible!) minimum amount that a seller has set for a lot and is the lowest price for which the seller is willing to sell. The highest bidder who meets or exceeds this price wins.

If this price is not met, you can still have a chance to win. The closer your bid is to the reserve price, the greater your chance of winning this lot.

The lot is awarded to the highest bidder whose bid is equal to - or higher than - the reserve price at the end of the auction. If the highest bid has met the reserve price or more, the lot is sold immediately for this price.

How much does it cost to buy at Troostwijk?

There is a fee, the buyer's premium, added to each lot you win. The amount of the fee is shown on each individual lot. You see the buyer's premium for each lot when you are logged in as a customer at Troostwijk. Note that VAT is always added to your bid unless otherwise stated.

What is an auto bid versus a manual bid?

An auto bid is a way for you to automatically participate in a bidding process. You enter an amount you are willing to pay for an item and then automatic bids are placed for you up to your maximum bid - but only if necessary. Your maximum bid is hidden from other bidders during the auction. Placed auto bids are indicated by an "A" after the placed bid in the bid history. You need to update a manual bid every time someone outbids you. Keep in mind that an auto bid in the same level as a later manual bid will always lead the auction - because it was placed first.
