About this lot
*Gilbert & George: is an Anglo-Italian artist duo consisting of Gilbert Prousch (born September 11, 1943 in San Martin de Tor, Italy) and George Passmore (born January 8, 1942 in Plymouth, England). Their career as an artist duo began in the late 1960s and continues to this day. Gilbert & George became known for performances and large photographic works behind glass. They have pioneered performance art, video art, and conceptual art. The work reflects what they consider to be a moral factor[1], such as life and death or good and evil. Gilbert and George have influenced Young British Artists, such as Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Marc Quinn. On 8 May 2007, Gilbert & George distributed a work to the general public for the first time via the Internet. This was done simultaneously via the online edition of the British newspaper The Guardian and the website of the BBC programme Imagine, which broadcast a documentary about the duo that day on the occasion of the major retrospective exhibition at the Tate Modern. The free artwork, entitled 'Planed' and made up of nine jpeg files, could be downloaded free of charge for a period of 48 hours after the broadcast in both a low- and a high-resolution version, with the intention that the downloader would print and frame it on his or her own printer. The title refers to the plane trees that line many London streets.
