About this lot
Dismaland was a temporary art project organized by street artist Banksy in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. The pop-up exhibit at the Tropicana, an abandoned lido, was prepared in secret and was "a sinister twist on Disneyland" that opened on the weekend of August 21, 2015 and closed on September 27, 2015, 36 days later. Banksy described it as a "family amusement park that is not suitable for children." The aesthetics of the "amusement park" may have been inspired by the "Dismayland" series of paintings by American artist Jeff Gillette, who also participated in the exhibition.
